Geospatial Engineer at Lenz Labs

Are you interested in applying your skills in geospatial analysis to bring the first innovation to rail in half a century? Our team has made their name in pioneering a novel, high-performance traction control system for locomotives and require a geospatial expert to develop and test a new platform to optimise the rail network’s maintenance operations. We are seeking a proactive individual to join our small, dynamic team in its early years and become a driving force behind the next big innovation for transport systems. Do you have what it takes?


Geospatial Engineer. We strive to continue Lenz’s vision of optimizing transport operations by exploring geospatial solutions to problems in the railway industry. This varied technical role will include:

  • Working in a small, dynamic team

  • Analysing geospatial data to detect features known to cause problems with public transport

  • Creating algorithms to extract data from satellite images into actionable insights

  • Working proactively to solve problems and taking responsibility for tasks as they arise

  • Employing a detail oriented approach with pride in their work

The Role

Title: Geospatial Engineer

Start Date: 5th January 2021

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland

Requirements: 2 days remotely, 3 days on premise

Salary: £22,200

Terms: Full-time



  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Science or GIS with an interest in geospatial imaging

  • Software development experience including git and CI/CD

  • Comfortable working with spatial databases and knowledge of datums and projections

  • Fluent in using Python to create algorithms for processing geospatial datasets. Particularly having worked with Earth Observation satellite data, such as SAR and MSI

  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work closely with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Be able to take initiative with planning workloads


  • Commercial experience working with cloud technology and containers

  • Previous experience working with front end map visualisation packages (eg Mapbox)

  • Sector knowledge in the railway industry
